June 16, Séguénéga.The first and only secondary school located in the rural community of Séguénéga, approx. 50 km east of Ouahigouya in Burkina Faso, is about to be expanded with an additional building.
This expansion will allow 200 more students to be admitted for the following school term in addition to the 250 students currently attending the school.
Opened in September last year, the school currently has an administration building, a residence for the head teacher, a kitchen and eight classrooms.
"Wend Kouni, Wend barka" (meaning “Oh, my God – thank goodness” in Mòoré), said Beloum Mamadou, the mayor of Séguénéga, joyfully at the start of construction last May. When the construction of the annex building was announced in September last year, he had been sceptical about whether the words would have been followed by deeds.
The construction of the school was financed with 85,000 euros for the first phase and with 35,000 euros for the second phase by the Erika and Erwin Schreiter Foundation.
